Technology companies from around the world will be heading for Wales at the beginning of June to find out how they can make the most of opportunities presented by advances in nanotechnology and micro-electronics.
Companies attending the 10th Anniversary of the S2K (Semiconductor 2K) conference in Cardiff, will also be given an insight into changes affecting the global industry from industry giants Intel, National Semiconductor and X-fab.
These include rapidly-changing developments in the areas of lighting and displays, printing and packaging, sensors and healthcare.
Mike Smyth, S2K Chairman explains: “Recent developments in micro- and nanotechnology have significantly influenced the direction being taken by technology companies across the globe. These include growth and developments in next generation sensors which are small in size, consume less energy; have better specificity and low weight. These technologies also make use of new materials such as carbon nanotubes, nanowires and nanoparticles which are pushing the boundaries of detection and monitoring.
“S2K has worked hard to ensure that this year’s 10th anniversary event in Cardiff provides great value – it is a well proven UK event which provides a world class platform for discussion on the future of our industry. The combination of business opportunity and technical information makes it a priority for high level decision makers,” he added.
The S2K conference which takes place at City Hall, Cardiff on June 3-4, 2009 will be opened by Ieuan Wyn Jones, Deputy First Minister, Welsh Assembly Government.
This will be the third time the event is being held in Wales.
Dr Chris Young, Chief Executive of the Welsh Electronics Forum and Vice Chair of the UK Electronics Alliance which sponsors the event alongside the Welsh Assembly Government and event organisers JEMI (Joint Equipment and Materials Initiative) said that she is hopeful the event will find a permanent home in Wales.
She said: “Technology companies in Wales have long been at the forefront of initiatives to tackle the big societal challenges such as energy-consumption, healthcare and reducing our impact on the environment.
“The S2K conference will explore the various challenges the industry will face going forward as well as provide tangible examples of how Welsh businesses can benefit from the £15bn nanotechnology and £22m lighting industries among others.”
